History of the White Rock Lake Volunteers In Patrol

The White Rock Lake Volunteers In Patrol was begun in 2000 when one of the runners at the lake noticed a similar program run by the New York Road Runners Club in Central Park. That program was started after a jogger was brutally gang-raped by a group of thugs in the park. Since a police station already existed in the park, they used two-way radios to contact the police in the event of an emergency. The program cut down on the crime rate in Central Park and is still in existence today.

With the increasing popularity of cell phones, it was decided to use cell phones in White Rock Lake Park. Under the guidance of Sr. Cpl. Sheila Cavanagh (now Greene) the program grew to about 25 members. With the transfer of Ms. Greene and the resignation of the second president, the patrol membership has dropped down to about 15 members.

Mel Cyrak, the founding president of the program, has agreed to serve again and is embarking on a membership drive. We hope you will join us!
